Every night is starting to blur together. D$ and I get home from work, gym, running and shopping to our new and lovely house. We make a meal together, start some laundry or clean up, or not. We may unpack another box, stand in one of our several empty rooms and talk about possibilities. Then at some point we retire to the patio for a cocktail. That's when it starts.
No one is at fault, not one is to blame, but one of us will pull out our phones and start playing Angry Birds (me), MLB baseball (him), solitaire, Words with Friends or Yahtzee. We troll on facebook, check gmail. And we sit. In silence. For hours. On our phones. I recently asked D$ if he remembered our first summer together- you know the puppy love stage? We would lay in bed (get your minds out of gutter!) for hours talking about everything and nothing, sharing our stories, getting to know each other. I jokingly commented that if we would have had iPhones then, we would have never gotten together. But, I think there may be some truth in that. Sometimes we'll play each other in Words with Friends, when we have a scrabble board the next room over. We play Yahtzee simultaneously when we could be rolling dice at the table.
We'll decide to do a phones free night- then someone we'll need to look up the name of Gwen Stefani's band and the phone gets pulled out, unplugged and all of a sudden we are plugged in again.
I am proposing for the summer, we spend a few nights unplugged. I'm not sure if we'll succeed, but I fear the alternative. D$ has agreed. Week nights will be tough, cause he does work on his phone once he comes home, but we've agreed to at least one week night and 2 weekend nights. We did a dry run last night and actually talked to each other. Marriage is built on communication- and we've lost that. If something doesn't change, I fear we'll lose the art of conversation with each other. There is no app for that.
I love this post. Thinking like this and being proactive is one of the many things that are awesome about you.
ReplyDelete2 problems though:
1) You couldn't remember No Doubt?!?!?
2) Why are we not playing Words with Friends? RealMikeT
