Nesting and the Repair man

D$ is a really handy kind of guy.  He's changed my oil since we were just dating, replaced my brakes, does his own car work, etc.  But living in an apartment together for 6+ years, I never saw his house handy work skills.  We always just picked up a phone if anything stopped working.

Growing up, I remember my dad fixing lots of things around the house, but as he got a bit older and his salary a bit bigger- we stated calling repairmen.  And I guess I assumed that's how I thought things would be in my house.

I was wrong.  Our washer and dryer came with the house and although it is nothing we would have every purchased (very pricey) I really appreciate them.  They are energy, space and water efficient- our clothes have never been cleaner!  I hardly use any detergent now and dryer sheets are a thing of the past.  The appliances are made so that the average owner can make many of the repairs themselves.  Which makes D$ happy and me nervous.

To be clear, we didn't buy a fixer-uper.  This house, although empty for a year, was in great shape.  But so far D$ has had the pleasure of fixing the dryer, replacing a part in the washer, doing a years worth of neglected maintenance on the water softener, swapping the water lines in the master bath (the hot ran cold and the cold ran hot), replacing the shower head in the hallway bath that I broke the first day, hooking up the irrigation system....In less than one month!

Hopefully my nervousness that happens whenever he picks up a wrench will subside, but for now it is still too new to be calming!  Of course I am very proud of the work he does, and the money he is saving us, however, it is quite the change from being a renter to an owner!

  1. That's awesome. I grew up with a very handy Dad. We never called a repairman. My husband is not handy but I am a little bit. I still rather call a repairman for big things.

  2. I did miss this while I was on vacation! That's so fantastic that D is knocking all these things off so quickly! I totally feel you on the nervous feeling, though. I still get a bit of anxiety when Todd starts/mentions a new project. =)
