what's different this time?

I should start out this post by indicating I am by no means claiming a victory and recognize I have a LONG way to go, but just wanted to recognize the difference in this journey versus previous attempts.

Now time to toot my own horn: I've lost 7lbs since January 1st.  Seven pounds.  That's huge for me as my last few years of weight loss attempts follow the same "lose two pounds, gain three lbs, lose two more" cycle.  I have lost and kept off 7 pounds.  Since it is so different, I've been thinking and trying to examine why the success and (I hate to say it) ease this time.  Here's what I've come up with:

1.  I'm not restricting any foods, just trying to work on portion control.

2.  I write down everything I eat.  So if I want chips at three I can have them, if I didn't eat a bagel for breakfast.  Also, I'm a lot less likely to eat junk if I have to write it down.

3.  D$'s new job.  He officially started in January and in the first month he was out of town for 7 days.  That's 7 nights that I was left to fend for myself for dinner.  I'm not going to lie- a few of those nights dinner was a bowl of chips and a half a bottle of wine.  But the majority of those nights I had a balanced, light and small dinner.  When I eat with D$ we tend to a) eat out more and therefore bigger portions or b) cook at home and eat a second helping.  Neither of those things happen when I am eating solo.  I  am also more inclined to go for an extra run or yoga after work, because my evening is my own.

4.  Busy days at work. When I am busier I am less likely to wonder into the kitchen, or get up 100 times for pretzels.

What helped you towards your weight-loss goals?

  1. Go you! That is so amazing! I've never been good at losing weight - it tends to happen when I quit thinking about it. That said - I'm also not a limiter, just a portion watcher. If I want ice cream, I eat it, but not nearly as much as I used to.
